4 Tips For Making Quicker Decorating Decisions

4 Tips For Making Quicker Decorating Decisions

When it comes to choosing paint color or finding the perfect piece of furniture, do you ever have those moments of complete indecision? Like, you just can’t decide. Well, you’re not alone. Here are some tips to help you make quicker and more confident decorating decisions.

1. Limit Your Choices

Today’s technology is both a blessing and a curse when it comes to accessing design inspiration. Between television, the Internet, magazines, email and podcasts, there is so much information bombarding us daily that it’s easy to feel overwhelmed.

One way to counter that is to limit your options. For example, if your project requires you to choose a paint color, only pick up a few paint cards to consider. No need to paint a ton of different swatches on your wall — limit yourself to two or three shades and then go with your gut. Choose the one that feels right.

2. Pay Attention to Your Habits

Unsure whether a certain style will work in your home? Your habits may be very revealing when it comes to your decorating style.

Study your shopping patterns. Do the same pieces, colors and patterns keep popping up? What do you tend to look at and save from magazines and on Pinterest? Is there a common denominator?

It’s normal to like a lot of styles, but some are better appreciated from afar. Make sure you consider the longevity of your interest in a certain color palette, sofa style or fabric before making a purchase. This will tell you if they have lasting power or if they’re just a passing fancy.

3. Eliminate the “What if?”

Many times playing it safe can be a good thing, but it’s not the most fun option. If you consistently admire risky design choices, why not try something different in your own space? Life is too short to not go for the bold paint color or fun fabric! It could be small, like incorporating some pillows in a new color; or you can go big, like paint an entire room emerald green.

You have to give the “what if” ideas a try sometimes or else you run the risk of losing interest completely.

4. Ask for Help

If you find yourself completely lost, don’t be afraid to seek out some assistance. Professional design help is easily found these days, and could actually save you a lot of time and energy.

In fact, many designers offer one-time consultations where they walk through your home with you, answer questions and give you ideas. In addition, for those uncomfortable having a decorator walk through your home, some designers offer e-design services where you can get help remotely.
