6 Ways to Always Keep Your Floors Spotless

6 Ways to Always Keep Your Floors Spotless

Although not always an easy task, having clean floors gives your whole home a polished feel. Plus, it’s a simple way to keep allergies, asthma and germs at bay. Use these 6 tips to keep your floors spotless, always.

1. Vacuum at least once a week.

Keep those hard surfaces clean by vacuuming them at least once a week. For carpet and rugs, which trap dust, dirt and allergens, twice a week. One way to make the chore less painful is to invest in an efficient and easy-to-use vacuum that will get the job done the first time.

2. Shoes come off at the door.

In addition to mud and dirt, the average shoe sole carries hundreds of thousands of bacteria, 90 percent of which transfer to hard surfaces on first contact. That’s why this easy-to-employ tip packs a major punch.

3. Get an air purifier.

While air purifiers are not typically associated with cleaner floors, the truth is that they actually do help clear dust, dander, allergens, and other airborne particles before they have a chance of hitting the ground. Some models remove more than 90 percent of airborne allergens and almost all dust particles. Plus, there are the air quality benefits.

4. Focus on your rugs.

Rugs are are magnificent for adding color, pattern and texture to a room, but unfortunately, they are also dust and allergen magnets. The only way to combat this is regular cleaning. To loosen particles so that they’re easier to pick up, try giving your rug a shake (without lifting it completely off the floor) before your weekly vacuuming. Also, vacuum the underside at least once a month, and clean up spills and stains immediately.

5. Tile grout is important too.

Your floors might be bright, shiny and clean, but you’ve let the grout get dingy. This can ruin the entire look. Luckily, there are solutions. One is to create a baking soda and vinegar mixture, and scrubbing the grout with a toothbrush. While this works well, over time it can be erosive. That’s why many experts recommend Spic and Span or Mr. Clean instead.

6. Keep your furry family members clean.

While pets bring so much love and joy into a home, they also bring dirt. To counter this, try keeping a designated “after-walk towel” by the front door so you will be reminded to wash their muddy paws when they come in from outdoors. Also, regular monthly baths help cut down on dirt and dander, while regular brushing cuts back on shedding.
