Only Have 15 Minutes? Here’s What to Clean

Only Have 15 Minutes? Here’s What to Clean

Sometimes it’s hard to free up time for chores, but we can all find a few minutes, right? From common and necessary jobs to those we tend to put off, here’s a list of cleaning tasks you can tackle in just 15 minutes.

Sweep or Vacuum the Stairs

Area rugs are a snap to keep clean because they’re easier to incorporate into short cleaning sessions. But cleaning the stairs usually requires more time and effort — especially since they seem to collect more dust and pet hair than any other area of the home. The good news is that once clean, maintaining your stairs shouldn’t feel like a tough chore. With a powerful lightweight vacuum, and 15 minutes of focused activity, you can commit to cleaning this high-traffic part of your home weekly.

Clean Under the Couch Cushions

It’s shocking to see how many crumbs and other random objects collect underneath the couch cushions. The next time you have the vacuum out, spend a few minutes pulling out the cushions and cleaning up the mess.

Dust Baseboards & Chair Rails

Although a lot of dust tends to accumulate on baseboards and chair rails, these are areas we often overlook. Take 15 minutes out of your day and go through your entire home dusting these spots with a dry microfiber rag.

Wipe Down Refrigerator Shelves

Cleaning out the refrigerator is a huge job that requires a lot of time and energy. For those unable to tackle an entire fridge clean out at once, consider the strategy of cleaning one shelf every time you return from the grocery store. Before you fill the fridge with fresh food, clear one shelf and completely wash and sanitize it. Once you’re finished, proceed with putting the groceries away. Just think, a few weeks of cleaning one shelf per week and the whole fridge will be clean!

Dust Ceiling Fan Blades

This can easily be a much quicker chore, depending on how low your ceiling fans sit. Use a pillowcase as a fast and easy cleaning tool for individual fan blades. Simply slide the pillowcase over the blade and it’ll capture all of the loose dust as you agitate the top of the blade.

Clean Out Laundry Dryer Vent

Learn how to clean your dryer vent, from the machine all the way out the vent, and you could prevent a house fire in your home. The good news is that this chore only needs to be done about once every six months (a perfect chore to align with daylight savings time). If you use the right tools, it’s actually a quick and easy task. More importantly, knowing it has been done will bring you peace of mind.

Sanitize the Inside of the Dishwasher

Simply stated, a clean dishwasher means clean dishes. You cannot rely solely on the dish detergent to clean the inside of your machine. Be proactive! Check the drain at the bottom of the dishwasher for trapped food particles. Clean the rubber seals on the door as well, since they can be a depository for food debris. In addition, running the machine with a mug of vinegar placed on the top rack will loosen deposits on the racks and walls of the dishwasher.

Wipe Out Your Shower

Quick washes more frequently will reduce the buildup of deposits and mildew in your shower, so that a “deep cleaning” isn’t required as often. Spray down the inside of the shower (including the shower head) 10 minutes before you plan to bathe using a 50/50 white vinegar and water solution. Then use an abrasive scrubbing pad to scrub down the walls before you get in. If you have a handheld sprayer in your shower, use it to rinse the walls. Once it’s clean, allow the shower to ventilate before you close it up again so that the moisture will completely evaporate.

De-Web Outdoor Light Fixtures

Because your porch lights are a magnet for spiders making webs, it’s important to take a dust rag to them every few weeks. Not only do the webs collect dust and other bugs, dirty lights are a real eyesore. Luckily, most fixtures are easy to maintain with just a few minutes of attention every once in awhile.
