Which Type of Home Pro Do You Need?

Which Type of Home Pro Do You Need?

Whether you’re remodeling, building, landscaping or decorating, here is your guide to figuring out which type of home professional you need for your project.

ARCHITECT

What do they do? Design buildings and often oversee the construction of their projects.

When do you need them? If you are taking on a major remodeling project, designing an addition that complements your home’s particular architectural style, or planning your dream home. Also keep in mind that an architect-designed space may also bring a higher resale price if and when you go to sell.

CONTRACTOR

What do they do? Manage all aspects of a project, from acquiring building permits, to hiring subcontractors, overseeing the day-to-day work and cleanup. General contractors are key when taking on any major remodel, home improvement project or new build.

When do you need them? If you have an architect’s plans and are ready to move forward on them, if you want to build a simple addition, or are planning a basic kitchen or bath update.

BUILDER

What do they do? Some collaborate with a homeowner’s architect and focus on custom homes with individual clients. Others are also developers, which means they purchase land and focus on creating communities of customizable homes.

When do you need them? If you have an architect’s plans for a new home, addition or remodel and are ready to implement them. Or, if you’re interested in customizing a new build in a community development. Builders can also be called upon for stand-alone projects like adding an in-law suite or replacing an outdated garage.

DESIGN-BUILD FIRM

What do they do? Provide homeowners with a one-stop-solution for design and construction services. They can be led by a builder or an architect, but all true design-build firms include both.

When do you need them? If you’re looking to remodel, add on or build from scratch and prefer the ease of working with one firm from beginning to end.

INTERIOR DESIGNER

What do they do? Create stylish and functional interiors, from the floor plan and furniture layout to window dressings and decor. Most interior designers are also able to design custom pieces to suit your style and space.

When do you need them? Call on an interior designer for style or design direction, if you’d like to optimize a small or hardworking space, or if you have a space (from a single room to an entire household) that you’d like to finally feel “finished.”

COLOR CONSULTANT

What do they do? Specialize in finding the right colors for your style and space. Some focus on color consulting exclusively, while others are also interior designers, decorators or architects.

When do you need them? If you’re having trouble choosing exterior paint colors, need a whole-house color palette or are having trouble coming to an agreement on paint colors with your partner or other decision makers.

PROFESSIONAL ORGANIZER

What do they do? Aid you in eliminating clutter, maximizing space, creating filing systems and developing habits to stay on track.

When do you need them? If you’re overwhelmed by clutter, are moving or have just completed a move, need help with a big life transition, or need help with a specific problem area of your home that you just can’t get under control.

CLOSET DESIGNER

What do they do? Some specialize in developing and installing custom wardrobe systems. Others provide space-planning services, custom built-ins and more.

When do you need them? If decluttering is not a priority and you just want to be able to find your stuff quickly and easily. Closet designers can create systems for your wardrobe, playroom, garage, kitchen and mudroom.

LANDSCAPE ARCHITECT

What do they do? These licensed and trained professionals design and plan custom outdoor spaces based on specific conditions.

When do you need them? When designing your outdoor dream space, dealing with challenging terrain, or are looking to use landscaping to add value to your home.

LANDSCAPE CONTRACTOR

What do they do? Handle all aspects of outdoor projects, from hiring subcontractors and applying for building permits to overseeing the work and managing work site conditions.

When do you need them? If you’re ready to bring the plans from a landscape architect or designer to life, or need help executing your own vision for an outdoor space.
